Hennepin County is hiring one or more Probation Officers in the Central Intake and Investigations Unit of the Department of Community Corrections and Rehabilitation (DOCCR).


Probation Officers in the Central Intake and Investigation unit assess, investigate, and prepare targeted misdemeanor pre-sentence investigations, misdemeanor, gross misdemeanor and felony post sentence investigations, inter/intra state transfer requests, intensive supervised release/supervised release agent assignment requests and triage court screenings/investigations.

Salary based upon qualifications:


Probation/Parole Officer salary: $60,080.36 - $90,120.54 Annually
Probation/Parole Officer, Senior salary: $63,084.38 - $94,626.57 Annually



Location and hours:


These positions are hybrid and will be performed both remote and on-site at the one of the following locations: Hennepin County Government Center (300 South 6th Street, A-1100, Minneapolis 55487), Brookdale Service Center (6125 Shingle Creek Pkwy Suite 300, Brooklyn Center, MN 55430) and Ridgedale Service Center (12601 Ridgedale Dr. Minnetonka, MN 55305) as job duties require. Work hours are generally 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with flexibility.


While these positions are designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.


New employees who are hired into remote or hybrid positions between January 2, 2022 to December 31, 2024, will receive $500 toward the cost of establishing consistent internet connectivity, payable upon completion of 6 months of employment.

In these positions, you will:

  • Interface with the court hearing process by interviewing clients, gathering, analyzing, and summarizing information about the client in a written report for the purpose of a pre-sentence investigation and providing recommendations for the court, court partners and supervision agents.
  • Complete post-sentence investigations, including interviewing clients, gathering, analyzing, and summarizing information about the client in a written report for the purposes of determining and imposing applicable programming and the most appropriate conditions of supervision.
  • Process incoming transfer requests from other jurisdictions or prison systems, gather and analyze information about the client for the purpose of identifying the most appropriate program area for the client to be supervised.
  • Participate in the Treatment Court Triage screening and investigations process by interviewing clients, gathering, analyzing, and summarizing information about the client in a written report for the purposes of determining Treatment Court eligibility.
  • Evaluate client risk and needs utilizing objective assessments and other screening instruments; interpret and assess the information to inform supervision and make referrals for treatment or programming based upon client risk and needs.
  • Investigate client backgrounds, review public records, interview persons with first-hand knowledge of the individual, participate and collaborate in multi-disciplinary teams and actively work with the client and collateral contacts.
  • Actively monitor client compliance with court and/or Department of Corrections ordered conditions and make appropriate referrals for supportive services as needed.
  • Rely on research-supported practices, including motivational interviewing to increase intrinsic motivation to change and promote skill building by utilizing Evidence-Based Practices (EBP).
  • Provide tools to help client build a support system that positively impacts the client’s well-being and promotes success with supervision.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement and criminal justice partners regarding client involvement in criminal activity to promote public safety and rehabilitation.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of a wide variety of case activity, including, but not limited to contacts with clients, victims, concerned parties and treatment agencies, utilizing department and client data systems.
  • Contribute to effective inter-agency relationships through formal participation as a DOCCR representative and/or leader. This includes but is not limited to justice stakeholder groups and agencies, human services, community organizations, academic institutions, department staff, volunteers, and interns.
  • Individuals hired at the PO level must demonstrate an ability to supervise/investigate a caseload with the least complex cases within the unit and build proficiency and competency with essential functions of the position through formal and informal training, while performing the other duties listed.
  • Individuals hired at the Senior PO level must operate with limited oversight and demonstrate an ability to actively case manage/investigate more complex cases, independently developing/adjusting supervision and/or case plans and defending decisions independently in Court, while performing the other duties listed.

  • For hire as Probation/Parole Officer:
    • One of the following:
      • Associate degree in any field and four or more years of relevant full-time equivalent paid experience with clients served by the justice system or human services.
      • Bachelor's degree in non-related field and two or more years of relevant full-time equivalent approved, related paid or volunteer experience with clients served by in the justice system or human services.
      • Bachelor's degree in sociology, social work, criminal justice, psychology, counseling, law enforcement, education, or a related field , and one or more years of full-time equivalent paid or volunteer work experience with clients served by in the justice system or human services.
      • Master's degree or higher in sociology, social work, criminal justice, psychology, counseling, law enforcement, education, or a related field; including the completion of a supervised clinical field work training/internship (if required by degree program).
    • Note: The Metro State University Evidence-Based Practices in Corrections Certificate may be substituted for one year of relevant experience.
  • For hire as Probation/Parole Officer, Senior:
    • One of the following:
      • Associate degree in any field and six or more years full-time equivalent paid experience with clients served by the justice system or human services.
      • Bachelor's degree in non-related field and four or more years of relevant full-time equivalent paid or volunteer work experience with clients served by the justice system or human services.
      • Bachelor's degree in one of the below areas and three or more years of relevant full-time equivalent paid or volunteer work experience with clients served by in the justice system or human services.
      • Master's degree or higher in sociology, social work, criminal justice, psychology, counseling, law enforcement, education, or a related field; including completion of a supervised clinical field work training/internship (if required by degree program); and one or more years of relevant full-time equivalent paid or volunteer work experience with clients served by the justice system or human services.
    • Note: The Metro State University Evidence-Based Practices in Corrections Certificate may be substituted for one year of relevant experience.
