Senior Animal Care Technician

W2 Contract

Location: South San Francisco, CA - Onsite Role

Job Summary:

We are seeking a Senior Animal Care Technician to provide weekend and holiday coverage for an animal colony vivarium setup. This role is an excellent part-time opportunity for someone with robust experience in animal husbandry looking for flexible hours in a supportive and professional environment. Shifts will start between 7-8 am and end around 5-6 pm. This role is ideal for someone who may be working another job and can provide extended availability during the winter holiday shutdown.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Manage internal animal colonies and provide husbandry care for our research animals following standardized laboratory procedures.
• Perform animal husbandry duties to maintain the quality, traceability, and health of research animals, including breeding, ear tagging, genotyping, and weaning.
• Maintain detailed husbandry and breeding records using colony management software (Climb).
• Provide backup support to changing cages and daily health and welfare observations as needed.
• Perform euthanasia procedures as directed.
• Develop an understanding of and regularly utilize available information resources and systems (e.g., SOPs, policies, computer applications).

Requirements and Qualifications:

• 5+ years of industry or academic experience with animal husbandry
• Hands-on expertise in working with mice and rats with an extensive background in animal husbandry, restraint, and handling
• Must have strong work ethic, ability to multi-task, enthusiasm for animal work, and possess a strong attention to detail
• Demonstrated ability to be proficient in data entry in a colony management software
• Proficient in computer applications such as Microsoft Excel
• Self-motivated to look for ways to improve and promote quality.
• Proficiency in animal welfare and overall knowledge of animal care and use
• Able to work outside of regular hours to meet business demands such as weekends and holidays.
