Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY :

Under the direction of the ACIO, Applications, the Senior Director of Epic Clinical Systems is responsible for the integrated BMC EHR system pertaining to clinical applications.  This responsibility includes the oversight of ongoing optimization, future development and implementations of new clinical systems, as well as the maintenance and support of the clinical EHR systems that support the end users of all BMC care areas.  This role will provide guidance and direction to the EHR Leadership (Directors, Managers and Team Leads) within their respective care area in the areas of application planning, team management and overall accountability of the support of their care area by the EHR application team.  To succeed, this role will collaborate with Boston Medical Center non-IT leadership, vendors, ITS colleagues and other stakeholders.  In addition, the Sr. Director of Epic Clinical Systems is responsible for the ongoing oversight of the EHR Governance. 

The Senior Director of Epic Clinical Systems will be a key member of the overall BMC IT leadership team and will be counted on to provide analysis & decisions towards hospital or IT initiatives identifying impacts within EHR portfolio roadmap.  Lastly this critical position will be a key contributor within the general management and staff development of IT as a whole.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

  • Leadership and oversight of BMC’s Clinical EHR Systems as it relates to the ongoing support and development of those applications.  This is inclusive of Epic Clinical Systems, Non-Epic Clinical Systems, Ancillary Systems (i.e. Lab, Cardiology, etc) and the Epic Training Platform.  

  • Leads change management efforts to ensure clinician adoption of new EHR functionalities and ongoing optimizations. 

  • Ensures all clinical systems meet regulatory and compliance standards, including HIPAA, CMS, ONC, and state-specific guidelines. 

  • Assess opportunities to align new clinical systems to support BMC’s strategic goals. Develop strong working relationships with the key stakeholders of the BMC Clinical EHR systems. 

  • Defines and monitors KPIs for clinical system adoption, clinician satisfaction, system uptime, and operational efficiency, ensuring that EHR optimizations align with strategic priorities. 

  • Builds, maintains, and effectively directs a high-performing team of associate directors, managers, team leads and individual contributors who manage and support those applications across all areas of BMC Clinical Operations, to ensure achievement of BMC EHR goals.  

  • Oversees staffing decisions, ensuring adequate expertise is available for implementation, optimization, and support efforts. 

  • Evaluate team member progress, especially direct reports, and provide regular feedback. Hold team members accountable for meeting standards, timely completion of deliverables, customer service, and user satisfaction, making staffing changes as appropriate. 

  • Develop and direct large scale project assessments and implementation. Develop and implement staffing plans for projects, ensuring appropriate skills are available to effectively and efficiently accomplish project goals. 

  • Oversees ongoing support of our Community Connect (CC) Partners post implementation. Develops and maintains strong relationships with Community Connect partners, ensuring Epic best practices are followed and addressing ongoing support and optimization needs. 

  • Responsible for the Clinical EHR Roadmap, managing existing and upcoming portfolio requirements as well as planning future year roadmap direction & initiatives. 

  • Manages annual operating budget and plans annual projections. Projects and manages large scale capital project budgets 

  • Own relationships with outside staff augmentation vendors to ensure availability of key types of resources; negotiate contract requirements 

  • Working with the IT and BMC Strategic Plan PMOs provides management oversight for EHR projects, including staffing, budgeting, and scoping. 

  • Develop and encourage inter-Information Technology Services relationships and collaboration.  Ensure the Manager(s) within the EHR Team and relevant staff are kept updated and are involved in projects as appropriate.  Facilitate and integrate intra-departmental activities. Ensure applications and projects meet BMC technical requirements and constraints. 

  • Continuously stays abreast of new developments in EHR products, both Epic and those to integrate and complement BMC’s EHR. Functions as BMC’s Clinical EHR expert in both the implementation and effective use of EHR technology. 

  • Ensures all clinical systems meet current regulatory, security, and compliance requirements. 

  • Participates in the overall management of IT as part of the BMC IT leadership team. Works with other IT directors to evaluate new projects, set priorities, improve employee engagement, develop a team culture, and perform other management duties. 

  • Performs other duties as assigned or as necessary.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent is required.  

  • Master’s degree in a Healthcare, IT, or Business-related field is strongly desired. 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

  • None required. 

  • HIMSS or PMP desired. 

EXPERIENCE:

  • 10+ years of related medical technology or healthcare IT EHRe, including at least 5 years in a leadership role. Prior work experience with one or more of the following EHR is required: EMR/EHR, Ancillary Systems, Patient and Physician Portals. CPOE, eRx, HIE, Physician Portal. 

  • Demonstrated experience managing projects required 

  • Experience working with Epic EHR required. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (KSAs):

  • Epic Clinical EHR knowledge required 

  • Strong software and application knowledge with base knowledge of relevant industry technologies. 

  • Experience with the design, development and implementation of Electronic Health Records. 

  • Experience leading full life cycle implementations 

  • Demonstrated leadership skills, with ability to work with multi-departmental teams and peers. 

  • Demonstrate strong project management skills, from vision through implementation. Ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously. 

  • Demonstrates strong multitasking skills displaying the ability to manage staff, many tasks and daily operations.
